x/ 2021
stereo sound 38’06’’/ music by loke berg, swedish, english, arabic (voices: hanna mächs, matthew branham, roua abohassan)/ trumpet: jonas due/ mastering joakim lindberg/ commission for gothenburg international biennal for contemporary art (GIBCA extended) and raumdeuter radio, curated by joe rowley. x is a sonic montage, produced for city bus line 25 in gothenburg (linnéplatsen–länsmansgården). using voices, ambience and music to appropriate a cinematographic aesthetic, the fragmented narrative follows a solitary cowboy, establishing analogies between the ‘wild west’ and the ‘politicised ‘west’ – aiming to raise questions on ethical compromise and lawlessness embedded in capitalism and ideals of modernity. the manuscript (voices) depart from anecdotal geographies on the designated route, making reference to f. i. carl linnaeus through the lens of categorisation, as well as the former swedish east india company. In speaking about what it means to name something, the sense of belonging, or how we as humans allude to ideas of identity, progression and arrival – x plays with romanticism, clichés and historic reference, gradually crumbling the western ideal of freedom along with its own solitary protagonist/ image: land 404, sound residency, jämjö, 2021
